cyclone ratings

Why It’s Important

When choosing a shade shed, don’t overlook wind ratings — they’re key to keeping your shed safe, compliant, and built to last in Australian conditions.

Wind ratings aren’t just numbers — they determine how well your shade shed performs in storms, strong wind gusts, and cyclone conditions. Choosing the correct rating helps protect what you’re storing and can also support smoother approvals, insurance, and peace of mind.

Wind ratings are based on your location and site conditions (terrain, shielding and exposure). If you’re unsure what rating you need, our team can help you confirm the right option.

Quick guide:
  • N ratings are for non-cyclonic regions.
  • C ratings are for cyclonic regions.

N-Ratings vs C-Ratings

The biggest confusion we see is thinking N1 and C1 are the same. They’re not.

N-Rated Structures (Non-Cyclonic)

N ratings apply to non-cyclonic regions and are designed for lower wind hazard areas. These typically require more basic bracing and are commonly used in sheltered locations with lower wind exposure.

Example: Many non-cyclonic classifications reference wind speeds up to around 122 km/h (site dependent).

C-Rated Structures (Cyclonic)

C ratings apply to cyclone-prone regions and are engineered for extreme conditions. Cyclonic-rated structures require significant reinforcement to meet the higher wind demands and compliance requirements.

Example: Many cyclonic classifications reference wind speeds around 180 km/h or more (site dependent).

C1 vs C2 — What’s the Difference?

Both are cyclone-rated. The right choice depends on where you live, what you’re storing, and how much future-proofing you want.

C1

Designed for cyclone-prone regions and strong winds. A solid option where cyclone compliance is required.

C2

Higher reinforcement for harsher conditions. Often chosen as a “future-proof” option for extra durability and confidence.

Still unsure?

If you’re in doubt (or you want the toughest option long-term), going C-rated is the safer choice. We can confirm what you need.

Hold-Down Systems & Compliance

Your wind rating isn’t just about the frame — the correct hold-down option and installation method matter too.

Tip: Always install your shed exactly as per the supplied engineering documentation. Incorrect anchoring or installation can impact performance and compliance.

How to Know Which Rating You Need

Ask yourself:

  • Where will the shed be installed?
  • Is your area cyclone-prone?
  • What are you storing (caravan, machinery, vehicles)?
  • Do you want minimum compliance or extra strength?
